As you step off the carriage, you see colorful flags proudly fluttering in the breeze around a stately marble edifice. Citizens are talking excitedly among themselves as they stride toward the building. You scurry to catch up with a group of villagers. “Is there some type of celebration taking place in your town today – maybe a beer-fest?” you ask hopefully.
“No, it’s even better!” enthuses one of the town folk. “We’re headed to a public hearing!” A public hearing doesn’t sound very exciting, and you give the villager a skeptical look. She continues, “Oh, we love a good public hearing. We come together to debate and listen to expert witnesses. We use our wits and hone our reasoning skills. It is great fun. And you are in luck because today is one of the most important sessions of the year. Today we are going to discuss the merits of natural law theory! Of course, here in this settlement, we all espouse natural law theory, but just the same, we are passionate about discussing its merits in a public forum.”
